Pair of Forgan left-handed Prince of Wales irons
Maker:
Robert Forgan and Son
, St Andrews Date: 1897
I bought these irons together and they probably left the Forgan workshop together 120 or so years ago so it is a shame to split them up.
Both left-handed, a cleek and a driving iron, the heads are rather pitted but "Forgan and Son, St Andrews" (in oval form), the Prince of Wales feathers, and "Warranted Hand Forged" are visible on both clubs. The feathers denoted the patronage of the Prince of Wales before he became King Edward VII in 1901 and the device changed to a crown.
The dark-stained hickory shafts both carry a clear Forgan stamp.
The grips are matching and original with heavy woollen listing peeping out through the sheepskin grips,
Sturdy enough to play with if you are corrie-fisted but also nice matching wall-hangers.
