Long-nose putter
Maker:
Charles Brand
, Carnoustie Date: 1894
A very substantial beech-headed putter from this fine Carnoustie craftsman with a very chunky lead backweight. The head is 4 inches long but nearly 2 inches wide at the broadest point so designed to propel a solid gutta ball across the rough greens of the period. A horn slip, secured by three hickory dowels, runs the length of the head.
The dark stained crown is clearly stamped "C Brand". The original hickory shaft, joined to the head by a stout scare, is stamped "C Brand Carnoustie" just below what is probably still the original sheepskin grip.
Suitable for play if you fancy a "running up" putter or a very fine display club from a maker so far rather neglected by collectors.
