Maxwell driving iron
Maker:
David Anderson and Sons
, St Andrews Date: 1912
A Maxwell driving iron, with holes drilled in the hosel to reduce the club head weight and resistance on the swing, in this case with a 3 x 3 pattern of nine holes, from the famous St Andrews family firm of David Anderson and Sons.
It has a dark patina all over the head and the face has a hand-punched enclosed dot face. The reverse of the head is stamped "D Anderson and Sons St Andrews", "Warranted Hand Forged" plus "Maxwell Driving Iron".
Unusually, given that they were principal agents for Forgan, the straight hickory shaft is stamped "Mitchell Manchester". It is topped with a black all-weather grip.
If you favour a driving iron, a playable pre-WWI club but equally an excellent display club with its deep patina.
