Ladies' lofting iron
Maker:
William Gibson
, Kinghorn Date: 1908
A good all-original ladies' lofting iron by William Gibson of Kinghorn made around end of the first decade of the twentieth century. The face has a simple enclosed ray pattern and the reverse has Gibson's star cleekmark, with an "L" for ladies; beside it. It is also clearly stamped "Warranted Hand Forged", "Special", "Lofting Iron". More faintly, within an oval at the centre of the head, is "W Gibson & Co Kinghorn".
A fairly whippy hickory shaft is topped with the original rubber/leather composite all-weather grip characteristic of the period.
