Stop Um Mashie
Maker: Ben Sayers , North Berwick
Date: 1915

Here is something of an oddity. The "Stop Um" was one of the best known ribbed face clubs which gave added backspin to the ball and were subsequently declared illegal by the R&A and the USGA. This, however, has a smooth face with a most unusual hand marked "pretty face" of interlinked circles. Given that the reverse of the head is marked "Made in Britain & USA", we are assuming it was made during the First World War when iron and steel were in short supply in Scotland but Sayers continued to sell many clubs in America. This was before the ribbed face was declared illegal so there is no obvious reason why the club has its own unique face marking.

Although it allows for the possibility of being made in either country, this club was made here as it is stamped "Hand Forged in Scotland" and presumably did not cross the Atlantic as Harry Roffe, for whom the reverse of the head is stamped, was at Longcliffe from 1912.

The hickory shaft is original and straight with the original listing on it. The grip, once burgundy but now very faded, is a replacement, perhaps from the late 1920s.
