Golf with Tony Jacklin

Date: 1978

Hardback, first edition of this book (1978, 136 pp) written by Michael Barratt, who will be remembered by UK browsers as the avuncular presenter of Nationwide.

Younger readers may remember Tony Jacklin only as a victorious European Ryder Cup captain. However, he became the first Briton to win the Open Championship for 18 years in 1969 and followed this with the US Open in 1970, making him, aged 26, the first Briton to hold both titles for 70 years. He never won another major: 'those that the Gods seek to destroy, they first drive mad', in Jacklin's case by pairing him with Lee Trevino. With the Open Championship of 1972 within Jacklin's grasp, at the 17th at Muirfield, Trevino holed a casually struck chip and Jacklin three putted. He dropped another shot at 18, lost the championship and, perhaps, his golfing career.
