Open Championship 1871: No competitionPerhaps taken aback by Young Tom's three consecutive wins and, hence, possession of the belt, there was no trophy to play for. The Prestwick club invited the R&A and the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers to contribute to a new "Golf Champion Trophy".
