Open Championship 1862: Prestwick
The Championship was in its third year and almost moribund. The leading amateurs had realised the previous year that there was too large a gap between them and the professionals and so only local Prestwick amateurs entered. Similarly, the dominance of Tom Morris and Willie Park discouraged even the professionals from entering for a competition which would bring them no financial reward and only William Dow of Musselburgh came, Charlie Hunter being the Prestwick pro. It mattered little to Old Tom who was in irrestible form in defending his title. He romped ahead of Park, by seven at the end of the first round, eleven strokes after two and ended up the winner by thirteen shots. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
