J H Brownlow
Worksop
J H Brownlow Born in Worksop in Nottinghamshire in 1894, James Hilton Brownlow is described in his obituary in the Worksop Guardian as having been a golf professional, first at Lindrick and then at Staffordshire. This may have meant he was an assistant but, in any event, I have not found independent confirmation of this. The 1911 census shows him living with his parents and employed as ‘an underground colliery worker’ i.e. a coal miner.

He served in the First World War with the Royal Horse Artillery and was wounded in 1916. he spent some time recuperating in Ireland then was sent back to France as a Gunner with the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed on 5 May 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
