H G Thompson
Banbury
Henry Gordon Thompson was born in Sandwich, Kent in 1890. I presume he was an assistant there as he was a boarder in the town in the 1911 census and described as a golf professional. In 1912 he was appointed professional to the Banbury Club in Oxfordshire.

He served as a Private in the 6th Battalion, the Buffs (East Kent Regiment) in the First World War.

In a letter to Henry’s wife in April 1916, he was reported missing by his platoon commander as a result of the explosion of a German mine but ‘as the enemy claim 31 prisoners’ the officer hoped Private Thompson would be among that number. It was not to be and he was confirmed as killed in action on 18.3.1916. He is commemorated on the Loos memorial.
