W W Mayo
Walton upon Thames
Walter William Mayo was born in Sedgley in Staffordshire in 1894, brother of Charles Mayo and Albert Mayo.

He was living with Charles (ten years his senior), his wife and baby daughter in Hersham, Walton upon Thames, at the time of the 1911 census. Charles was professional to the local Burhill club with Walter as an assistant.

He qualified over Old Fold Manor for the final of the 1914 £350 Sphere and Tatler tournament, a shot ahead of Charles and Ted Ray.

His elder brother was instrumental in setting up the Niblick Brigade, bachelor assistant golf professionals, who volunteered for the Great War and fought together in the Rifle Brigade so, unsurprisingly W W was one of the first to volunteer.

He was killed while serving with the Rifle Brigade in 1916.
