Matthew Owen
Leigh/Tynemouth
Matthew Owen Born in Harlech in 1887, Matthew Owen was professional at the Leigh club in Cheshire between 1906 and 1914. At that time he took up the professional’s post at the Tynemouth club but enlisted in the Grenadier Guards on the outbreak of war. On the formation of the Welsh Guards he was transferred to the Prince of Wales Company and promoted to sergeant.

He was killed in action on 27 September 1915, crawling out of a trench to get ammunition. He had been married the previous August.
