P J Gaudin
Manchester/London/Chicago
One of five professional golfing brothers from Grouville, Jersey, Philip John was the third oldest, born in 1876. He spent the first part of his professional career in the north west of England, first as an apprentice clubmaker at West Lancashire in 1894, later as professional at Filey in 1897 and then at Manchester between 1898 and 1906. This was interspersed with seasons at Dieppe and Paris in 1896.

In 1906 he became professional at the new Fulwell club in London with one of his brothers as assistant, opening the course with a match against J H Taylor. His next post was also in the London area, at Camberley from 1913 until 1916.

Despite not being English, he represented that country in matches against Scotland six times between 1905 and 1913.

He emigrated to the United States in 1916 to take up the post of professional at Onwentsia near Chicago in 1916 and at Skokie Country Club and Union League Club, Illinois, in 1919. He wrote instructional articles which were widely syndicated in US newspapers in the 1920s. Indeed, the claims on his time as an instructor were so great he abandoned tournament play altogether.
