Clubmakers A J "Jack" Rowe Ashdown Forest Jack Rowe was born in that cradle of English golf, Westward Ho!, in 1870. Surprisingly he did not learn his clubmaking skills from Charles Gibson but as a carpenter instead. He did learn to play under the guidance of the two great local amateurs Horace Hutchinson and Arthur Molesworth and it was Molesworth who suggested he make a career out of golf rather than going to art school. With this recommendation, Rowe spent a year as the professional at Douglas on the Isle of Man before going to Royal Ashdown in 1892 remaining there for more than fifty years. His clubmaking was highly regarded although he had a very limited output. He would not have been impressed by the grainy picture we have here: he was a keen and accomplished photographer.
