Antique Golf Clubs from Scotland
Clubmakers
R D Smith
Monifieth
Professional and clubmaker at the Broughty club in Monifieth from 1901 until the 1930s, Robert was the son of J C Smith assumed as a partner in 1897 and took over the running of that firm from his father in the late 1890s.

In addition to supplying the local market, the firm had a large export business, especially to India where they would be a familiar name to the many Dundonians in the jute business. The local Dundee press reported three consignments being dispatched from Smith’s to Bombay, Calcutta and British Columbia in 1907.

He produced clubs under his own name in addition to running the family firm which produced a remarkable number of clubmakers who went on to professional positions in the United States.

He retired in 1933 and sold the business to George Smith of Lossiemouth.
