Standard Mills
Sunderland
Standard Mills The best known manufacturer of aluminium clubs, based in Sunderland, Wearside. It was the golf club arm of William Mills Ltd, a marine engineering company who used aluminium extensively in this area. It was officially called the Standard Golf Company but soon became known popularly as Standard Mills because of the fame of William Mills (later Sir William) who achieved further fame through the production of Mills bombs in the first world war.

The attraction of aluminium was the feel of contact with the ball when compared to that of steel and the whole range of clubs were made in moulds in a style similar to older long-nosed cleeks. The weight and lie of the the clubs is usually stamped on the sole. Although they made both left- and right-handed clubs, one unusual item is the two-faced club designed to remove the problem of awkward stances.
